THE FEMALE GAZE / MIZE GALLERY

A lovingly haunted collection of new works by Perry deVick & Summer Elaine Hue

Ghosts, familiars, & witches beckon as MIZE Gallery presents The Female Gaze, which opened October 14th, 2022. Both deVick and Hue have exhibited at MIZE before, but this time they took possession of every wall with over 60 brand new artworks and installation elements.

This show plays on the concept of the Female Gaze by taking it from a sexual context and turning it toward Halloween. (Well, if you peek through the right curtain, you might find that sexual context.) Some of the works are figurative, allowing the viewer to fall under the gaze of a cryptid, a witch, or her familiar. Other works evoke natural spaces or the tools of the occult. Perry deVick uses oil paint on wood panels. Summer Elaine Hue develops her paintings digitally and screen prints them onto wood panels. While their media approaches differ, both formally trained artists create a sense of whimsical illustrative realism.

The creative pair live and work together in the Artist Enclave of Historic Kenwood. This opening was extra special for them. Not only is it their first duo show as a team, but they perfomed a special ritual together before the opening reception. Hue and deVick got married at the gallery before the doors open.
